We will be having a lot preparation for spring planting of wonderful veggies!

We will be having the Usual:

1. POTLUCK! bring all the food you want to share, we usually have a wonderful spread because of all of you!! Don’t forget: some people are vegetarian/vegan. AND COFFEE AND TEA! (please)

2.COMMUNITY DISCUSSION! We are having a discussion entitled “Food for the People, By the People” –communication builds communities.

3. FREE STORE! Bring those things that are still in good shape,but ya just don’t need anymore…. Clothes, books, small furniture, CDs, DVDs, & dishes are things that have been brought to Philly Food Forests events in the past which have gone over well. These items will be made available to the community for free, or swap them for things they bring. At the end of the event, these items will be taken to a community center nearby for free distribution!

4.WHAT SHOULD I BRING?! We can always use things! Some ideas:

A friend, or two
something to write on
instruments if it isn’t too cold

Your mom, or dad!

WHAT IS OCCUPY VACANT LOTS: We are a hodge-podge group of volunteers from all over working to create a future Philadelphia where every vacant lot is a free food-producing space, community orchard/food forest, community park, beautiful flower garden, or some variation thereof. Access to fresh, free food will take us to the next step of self-sufficiency & break us from the cycle of dependency we have on the government & fossil fuel-guzzling corporate food system. We are working to establish partnerships with pre-existing community organizations, resident activists, children, religious & educational institutions, & every individual in this city tirelessly working towards these same goals. If we combine minds, hearts, & resources we won’t have to wait around anymore for someone else to make the change.

WHY? Occupy Vacant Lots is NOT about beautification, our ultimate goal is NOT a “cleaner street”, & we are NOT aiming to enter communities to create gardens for our personal benefit. As a group, WE are not looking to occupy spaces permanently, we are here to help communities realize THEIR vision of occupying THEIR vacant lots with food for as long as they want. We are doing what we’re doing for one reason: we believe that free, fresh, healthy food is a human right, & a right our government is currently failing to provide. Because we believe in this human right, we want to work with neighbors & organizations with pre-existing relationships in communities to assist in the labor, advocacy, learning, & outreach it takes to successfully create a growing space.

FOOD FOR THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE!

Occupy Oakland: Over 400 Arrested As Police Fire Tear Gas, Flash Grenades at Protesters

Police have arrested more than 400 Occupy Oakland protesters, as well as a number of journalists, in one of the largest mass arrests since the nationwide Occupy protests began last year. When protesters attempted to convert a vacant building into a community center on Saturday, witnesses say police used tear gas, bean bag projectiles and flash grenades. Several hours later, police said some of the protesters broke into City Hall. However, demonstrators claim they found the door to City Hall already ajar. We play a video report from Oakland filed by John Hamilton of KPFA. We get a response from Occupy Oakland member, Maria Lewis, to Oakland City Council Member Ignacio De La Fuente’s accusation that the Occupy movement is engaging in “domestic terrorism.” “They are more interested in protecting abandoned private property than they are the people. And the idea that opening up a social center is terrorism is very telling of the narrative of the police state,” Lewis says. [includes rush transcript]

AMY GOODMAN: We turn now to Oakland, California, where police have arrested more than 400 Occupy Oakland protesters as well as a number of journalists. One of the largest mass arrests since the Occupy protests began took place on Saturday and early Sunday when people attempted to convert a vacant building into a community center. On Saturday, after the crowd reportedly refused to follow police orders to disperse from the vacant Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center, witnesses say police used tear gas, bean bag projectiles and flash grenades. Several hours later, police said some of the protesters broke into City Hall. However, demonstrators claimed they found the door to City Hall already ajar.

The Associated Press quoted Oakland Mayor Jean Quan as saying people who broke into City Hall burned a flag they found inside, broke an electrical box, and damaged art displays. Mayor Quan, later directly addressing Occupy Oakland and its supporters.

MAYOR JEAN QUAN: Occupy Oakland has got to stop using Oakland as its playground, and that people in the community and people in the Occupy movement have to stop making excuses for this behavior.

AMY GOODMAN: Meanwhile, the Occupy Oakland Media Committee group issued its statement, saying police officers had violated their department’s code of conduct for dealing with protesters, calling the mass arrests “illegal.”

For more, we go now to a video report from Oakland filed by John Hamilton.

JOHN HAMILTON: Occupy Oakland billed Saturday as “Move-In Day,” as their afternoon march set its sights on the sprawling Kaiser Convention Center near downtown.

POLICE OFFICER: I hereby declare this to be an unlawful assembly and, in the name of the people of the state of California, command all those assembled to immediately leave the area.

BOOTS RILEY: Occupy Oakland is marching to go occupy a building to have a home base. They’re kicking folks out of Oscar Grant Plaza, so we’re going to go take a building.

JOHN HAMILTON: A crowd of some 2,000 hoped to turn the vacant convention center into a community space, but Oakland’s police department had other ideas.

POLICE OFFICER: You may be arrested or subject to removal by force, if necessary, which may result in serious injury.

PROTESTER 1: This is not an unlawful assembly. This is a lawful assembly. We are not doing any vandalism.

JOHN HAMILTON: Thwarted in their attempt to claim a new space for Occupy Oakland, protesters soon found themselves face to face with scores of riot police. Stephanie Demos is an Occupy Oakland activist.

STEPHANIE DEMOS: Police began firebombing the crowd. They were shooting rubber bullets, they were shooting explosive devices, and they were shooting tear gas. And we were all gassed. I was gassed.

PROTESTER 2: I started tasting a little tear gas in the back of my mouth, and then I saw a shot, and it landed right where some people had these like corrugated metal sort of barricady things. And everybody started running. And then you could really kind of taste the tear gas.

JOHN HAMILTON: The extraordinary violence came as protesters sought to reestablish a permanent occupation, following police raids last November which cleared their encampment outside City Hall.

STEPHANIE DEMOS: For Move-In Day, the objective was to get a large building where we might be able to have our meetings indoors, especially during winters, and have a good kitchen where we could provide not only for ourselves as a movement, but provide for the homeless population in this town who do not have kitchens and do not have food half the time, have spaces for people, you know, to gather and have a library and every other kind of regular social function that a community space would have.

JOHN HAMILTON: Members of Occupy Oakland say their campaign to challenge corporate power was dealt a serious setback after city officials denied them a permanent public space. Marla Schmalle is an Oakland community activist.

MARLA SCHMALLE: When we had the encampment, people could come down every night. But people lived here all day, and they kept talking, and the consciousness began to build. So when the camp was taken away, and it was cold anyhow out here, I mean, we really need a place in order to develop our consciousness about what’s happening.

JOHN HAMILTON: In all, about 400 people were arrested throughout Saturday’s day of action, many of them kettled by police in an area outside a YMCA during a nighttime march through Oakland’s downtown. Again, Stephanie Demos.

STEPHANIE DEMOS: And as they were marching, they were waylaid by police again and kettled in to in front of the YMCA, where they were surrounded by police. And when they were given an order to disperse, they were not given a path to disperse.

PROTESTER 3: We want to go. We want to leave. Let us leave.

PROTESTER 4: We don’t want to be here. We want to go.

STEPHANIE DEMOS: They were completely surrounded and pushed into the building. So, there were people working inside the building who voluntarily opened the doors to the building to let people get in and escape out the back way.

JOHN HAMILTON: But the day’s actions and the arrests that would follow were not done. Pacifica Radio host Mitch Jeserich witnessed a further protest at Oakland City Hall.

MITCH JESERICH: I didn’t see anyone break into City Hall. The door was open. Some people went inside. A lot of people didn’t go inside. You could tell there was—a lot of people were hesitant to go inside. It seemed like a very major thing to do. The people who did go inside, they went into, I believe, the city council chamber, brought out the American flag that was in there, and then tried to burn it. They didn’t burn the whole thing, but they tried to burn it out here. Then the police showed up, fired some flash grenades, smoke bombs, and it dispersed.

JOHN HAMILTON: Though they endured the largest day of arrests in their young movement’s history, members of Occupy Oakland say they’re preparing to escalate their campaign.

PROTESTER 5: Occupy Oakland will join in enthusiastically with the call for a national and global general strike on May 1st, May Day, 2012. And we encourage all other Occupies, all other social movements in the world, in this country, to join on to that call, as well, and make May 1st a massive general strike across the world.

PROTESTER 6: With 200 exactly votes yes, a strike has passed. No stand-asides, zero no’s, to voted, 200.

JOHN HAMILTON: For Democracy Now!, I’m John Hamilton, with Brandon Jourdan, in Oakland, California.

AMY GOODMAN: And you are watching and listening to Democracy Now! I’m Amy Goodman, as we turn now to Berkeley, California, to Maria Lewis. She’s a participant in the Occupy Oakland movement, an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, where she is broadcasting to us from.

Maria, explain what happened this weekend and what happened to you.

MARIA LEWIS: Hi. Yeah. So, this weekend, despite the brutal police repression that the people of Oakland faced, I think was a really beautiful weekend. What we saw was thousands of people taking to the streets to reclaim what this economic and political system in this country has systematically denied us, which is the right to basic food, basic shelter, basic medical care, the things that the Oakland Commune, Occupy Oakland, used to provide in its encampment and has been unable to since that encampment was brutally repressed by the Oakland police. There were thousands of people in the street who fought to reclaim a building, a vacant building, and one of the hundreds of vacant buildings in the city, and to open that space up for people as a social center, as a place where we can get basic—our basic needs met and meet them ourselves. And while we weren’t able to secure that building this weekend, I was really amazed at the spirit and the voracity of the Oakland residents who were fighting in the street this weekend.

I think one of the other things we saw this weekend was a brutal police repression that was really revealing about the priorities of the city. So, tear gas, flashbang grenades, rubber bullets, beanbag guns were all used against Oakland residents who were attempting to retake an abandoned building. All of this was used to protect abandoned private property, and I think that that’s really revealing about the city’s priorities, that it’s really more interested in protecting abandoned private property than it is in human beings.

AMY GOODMAN: Maria Lewis, what about some of the reports that said that the protesters were violent?

MARIA LEWIS: Absolutely. There was a lot of anger this weekend, and I think that the anger that the protesters showed in the streets this weekend and the fighting back that did take place was reflective of a larger anger in Oakland that is boiling over at the betrayal of the system. I think that people, day by day, are realizing, as the economy gets worse and worse, as unemployment gets worse and worse, as homelessness gets worse and worse, that the economic system, that capitalism in Oakland, is failing us. And people are really angry about that, and they’re beginning to fight back. And I think that that’s a really inspiring thing.

AMY GOODMAN: Maria, you were not personally arrested, but you have—I mean, this weekend, we saw one of the largest mass arrests in the last year. Seven hundred people were arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge at the beginning of the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York. Talk about your own choices in not being arrested, also being a student and your involvement with this movement, and how the arrests were conducted.

MARIA LEWIS: Yeah. So, what happened—there were several arrests that happened during the day, when we attempted to occupy the Kaiser center, but the majority of the arrests happened later that evening when we attempted to march to a backup location and to occupy a backup location. The police kettled the protesters twice. The first time we were kettled at 19th and Telegraph, we were surrounded on all sides and given no option to disperse and then tear-gassed while in the kettle. And it was only really through the scrappiness and resourcefulness of the protesters that we were able to escape that kettle by tearing down a fence and escaping. The protest was then kettled about 20 minutes later at another intersection. Some people were able to escape over a fence, and a few people were able to escape through the YMCA, which opened its doors to us once they realized what was going on. But many people did not escape, and I’ve heard estimates of up to 400 people arrested.

AMY GOODMAN: Oakland City Council Member Ignacio De La Fuente accused the Occupy movement of engaging in domestic terror.

CITY COUNCIL MEMBER IGNACIO DE LA FUENTE: It’s an escalation with our—I think that basically what, in my opinion, amounts to kind of a domestic terrorism, when these people start taking buildings, and they start costing the city incredible amount of resources.

AMY GOODMAN: Maria Lewis, your response?

MARIA LEWIS: Yeah. I think that that was—the idea that reclaiming vacant abandoned buildings is terrorism is very retelling of the city’s priorities and of what the city—what the Oakland Police Department serves and protects. They are more interested in protecting abandoned private property than they are the people. And the idea that opening up a social center is terrorism is very telling of the narrative of the police state.

We talk about energy & jobs as though someone will do something about it when the solution to both is so clear……

We can make this country great again & be a leader in a developing market while saving the planet and bringing electric to the whole world.

If we would start off by putting every able bodied un employed person whom wants a job to work installing renewable energy systems on every single government owned building / parking lot/ stadium.

We would reduce our energy consumption, put people back to work, and be able to reinvest the money we save on energy.

Solar panels & micro /vertical wind turbines have made it possible to catch energy anyplace the sun shines or the wind blows.

Today the whole planet needs this and we need a market to lead….. Why not lead the renewable energy market? Why are third world countries better at this than we are ?

When did the USA start being ok with second place ?

You can keep letting your politicians be led by oil companies …… or you can demand real CHANGE!

About genetically altered foods …………we have been eating them for decades & they have never told us…

It seems that this also is a very confrontational topic. It is pretty obvious why we need better production with food, but the un scientific way (untested on users of said product) the companies are going about with their alterations could cause many accidental deaths, all so a company can hold a patent on a new “super bean”.
What pisses me off is we have been eating this stuff for decades; at least 50% of all soy and 38% of all corn acreage in the USA planted this year has been altered (earthsave). They did not get to this large number overnight, and I feel they could have told us and had the products properly labeled by now. (it never ceases to amaze me what a “corporation” can get away with but a regular person can’t sell homemade candles without proper labeling.)
With the companies responsible not doing any testing on the finished product to see about interactions or even to see if the food is actually better ie more nutritious, less fat, produces more (etc.) I am surprised that only one large health emergency has been linked to GA foods so far .

it seems Gov Corbett is “considering a fee from the gas drillers to combat problems caused by the “fracking” , he went from, “I will absolutely not tax the gas drilling industry”, to well maybe we need to charge them a fee, to be able to fix the damage caused by them……………. I’ll be dam the man does have a little common sense!… Now if he would tax them too, maybe the schools may not need to lay off 200 people each school, & maybe not cut educational funding to PA College students.

Here is the thing, taxes are not meant to stop the gas drillers but make them pay way like all the rest of us do, if we were not PAID OFF LIKE, THE PA GOV. TOM CORBETT. If an industry can come in to a place and poison their water supply, they need to be held accountable and taxed and fined like every other American. The problem is with our governor not wanting to tax these companies; Mr. Corbett will not tax them because they are a new industry and could bring growth to PA…… I say , then DO NOT TAX THE RENEWABLE ENERGY INDUSTRY as well, in a fair and equal world, so that renewable energy could grow as fast as the gas energy business, but the renewable energy business is not run by lobbyists putting thousands of dollars into Mr. Corbett’s pockets.
PS. Mr. Corbett, we have the shale here….. they need us more than we need them. So making them pay their fair share of taxes should not stop them if they are legitimate business people, and not looking to just rape/ desecrate the land, ruin our water supplies then move on like a thief in the night. Like the coal industry has already done to PA & never made to clean up!

Obama Is on the Brink of a Settlement With the Big Banks—and Progressives Are Furious

For months, a massive federal settlement with big Wall Street banks over their role in the mortgage crisis has been in the offing. The rumored details have always given progressives heartburn: civil immunity, no investigations, inadequate help for homeowners and a small penalty for the banks. Now, on the eve President Obama’s State of the Union address—in which he plans to further advance a populist message against big money and income inequality—the deal may be here, and it’s every bit as ugly as progressives feared.

The Associated Press reports that a proposed deal could be announced within weeks. Five banks—Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citibank and Ally Financial (formerly GMAC)—would pay the federal government $25 billion. About $17 billion would be used to reduce the principal that some struggling homeowners owe, $5 billion more would be used for future federal and state programs and $3 billion would be used to help homeowners refinance at 5.25 percent. Civil immunity would be granted to the banks for any role in foreclosure fraud, and there would be no investigations.

There are several reasons why this is could be a terrible deal. For one, the dollar amount is inadequate in relation to both the tremendous loss of wealth via mortgage fraud and the hefty balance sheets of these massive companies. Furthermore, the banks might be allowed to use investor money instead of their own funds—this makes the penalty even lower. Beyond all that: it’s extremely hard to justify the absence of investigations and punishment for mortgage fraud that was so widespread and so damaging to people’s lives.

There are also many other, more serious problems besides a lack of punitive action. The small amount of money—and the federal government’s recent inability to truly help underwater mortgage holders, of which there are currently 11 million—means that the victims of mortgage fraud might not see enough relief. And perhaps most importantly, with no real punishment for widespread damaging fraud, what are the incentives on Wall Street not to engage in similarly destructive practices once again?

On a major conference call this morning, many leading progressive voices inside Washington and out blasted the deal.

Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio characterized the rumored deal as “not much more than a slap on the wrist,” and added that while banks were always know to be too big to fail, they were now apparently “too big to jail.”

“When laws are broken there need to be full investigations,” Brown said. “Wall Street should not get another bailout.”

Brown urged Obama to reject the deal and order investigations into the banks’ practices immediately. Simon Johnson, an economist at MIT and well-known progressive voice, also called for no deal and immediate investigations.

“This is not just the right thing do, and not just good politics, it’s good economics,” Johnson said. “What’s at stake here is the rule of law.”

Robert Borosage, co-director of the Campaign for America’s Future, blasted the rumored deal as well and urged the administration to consider the political optics.

“No one who robbed a bank would be offered immunity, a modest fine, and no admission of guilt before there was an investigation,” Borosage said. “Americans are increasingly cynical with the ability of democracy to deal with special interests.

“The president’s campaign will sensibly highlight his commitment to fairer rules,” he continued. “Needless to say, a sweetheart deal with the banks will contrast with that.”

As we noted last week, many progressive groups have begun a massive petition drive to push back against the settlement and demand fair investigations. Moreover, attorneys general in California, New York, Delaware, Nevada and Massachusetts have previously said they won’t be a part of any deal that offers civil immunity.

So the deal is far from done—but it’s certainly moving towards an undesirable conclusion. We’ll have plenty more in this space all week.

The traditional answer

The Party answer
An anarchist is an extreme libertarian, like a socialist is an extreme democrat, and a fascist is an extreme republican.

The straight answer

Ok… The first part is to show the blinding obvious parallels between Libertarians and Anarchists in a humorous way… The common ground is there if those parties in question are willing to acknowledge and accept the fact that we are all fighting the same battle… For several months now OWS and occupations in general preach about solidarity and all-inclusiveness, to turn around and marginalize ourselves within this movement with lies, deceit, and manipulation… To reject the numbers we need to grow into something brilliant, because some factions within want to have a pure socialist movement??? How does this make any sense??? To fracture the movement and brotherhood that we felt in the beginning… Splitting apart virtually with multiple websites and Facebook pages… Spreading disinformation about one another to vainly rally our local populace to one faction or another… Shamefully sending provocateurs to run off anyone with an idea that opposes our own… I said it before folks; I’ll say it again… We are not at war with each other… We are supposed to fight together against our common oppressors… Our government, corporations, and main stream media are the targets… The way to accomplish this is from within…

Now… If Noam Chomsky can bring himself to defend Ron Paul and admit that there is common ground to be found, then why can’t this movement??? Nothing is set in stone… Nothing is purely black and white, left or right, democrat or republican… There is a cornucopia of opportunities if we look past the paradigm…

We now have a libertarian in republican clothing running, someone that even an anarchist could vote for, I know this for a fact because I know a few of you talked to me during the eviction nights while your leaders were tucked away in there hotel rooms and houses… Telling me how sick you were with the hypocrisy of your leaders because they wouldn’t let you even approach the topic of some of the libertarian views and ideals… Someone that has already said he is on our side when we mic checked him… Someone who actually is against the same problems… One of the few voting against bills like SOPA, PIPA, and even adding legislation to remove the NDAA… Someone who wants to go after the issues that matter to most of us… I think it might actually be time to do what needs to be done… Is he the occupier’s ideal candidate??? No, but he is the only chance we’re going to get this year… The world economy is under structured collapse that is in progress and so is ours… Yes it could get kicked down the road again like in 2008… But eventually it will happen… A world government and world banks are not what we need… We still need to take back our movement and our country from the real domestic terrorists that want you to shut up and fall in line…

I don’t want you to blindly follow what I say… Open your eyes and more importantly your minds… Don’t get wrapped up in mob rule… Don’t follow leaders here who are involved from afar or imported from across the country, they’re on the payroll or exploiting the situation for their own profit… Use some common sense and logic… Look at reliable facts and resources in alternative media, the mainstream media is a lie and you just have to go around it… Question everything and connect the dots… The truth will set you free…
